West Bend, WI. RESIDENT: Grandview In a short history of the Center Valley Church written in 1900 by the late Alonzo T. Dye, he states-"undoubtedly the History of the Baptists of Center Valley had its beginning  (date unknown, but probably in the early '40's), with the coming into the neighborhood of Joseph Holdren, Jr. and his wife, Ruth, known by the ol,der ones of us as Grandma Holdren; she became a Christian before coming here, and is said to  have been a very earnest and devoted Christian. It was in her home that the early Baptist ministers found a welcome and Baptist meetings frequently were held. The first Baptist minister to preach in the neighborhood was Jermaiah Dale, then pastor of the Newport Church, who frequently preached and held meetings in the Murdoch School House. It was during one of these meetings that Geroge and Thomas Holdren, sons of Joseph and Ruth Holdren were converted and were baptized in a hole in the run in front of where we sit today and became members of the Newport Church. These are supposed to have been the first Baptist converts fo the community".

The two story other buildings of the block, north of the Joel Compton barn, was for an ice house for the Butcher shoip. Most buildings were moved to Compton by 1874.

Born Feb 4, 1825 died Feb 3, 1899. Our village was shocked when informed of the sudden death of one of its old and prominent citizens. Mr Holdren died at the close of the dinner hour. Four some time he had been troubled with his heart and two weeks ago was taken sick with the grip.

The place of his birth was Mt. Pleasent township, Columbia county Pa. When a boy he worked on his father's farm. He assisted in the management of the farm until after his marriage. In August 1849, he was united in marriage to Miss Phebe A. Derr. Mr. Holdren brought his young wife west in June, 1851, and located in this county, one mile south of Compton. In 1876 Mr. Holdren rented his farm, and with his family took up his residence in Compton. He was a man of Highest integrity, an upright citizen and a devoted father.

Public affairs received a large portion of his attention during his life, being at the time of his death, president of the village board, also president of the cemetery association. He leaves five children, two girls and three boys, to mourn his loss, his wife having died about a year ago. The children are Mrs. Shepard Mannon, Mrs. Janet Davison, Messrs. William, Edward, and Sherman Holdren. Years ago he united with the Baptist church, but after comming west he never identified himself with any church but continued to live in the faith of his early choice.

John Holdren, a wealthy farmer residing in the village of Compton, is honored as one of the pioneers of Lee County, whose work has helped in making it one of the richest and best developed agricultural counties of Northern Illinois. He was born February 4, 1825, in the part of Mt. Pleasant Township, Columbia County, Pa, now included in Montour County.

John was educated in his native county and there grew to man's estate. He was early taught to be of use on his father's farm, and he continued to assist him in its management until after his marriage, remaining an inmate of the parental home until then. In 1851 he determined to emigrate to the fertile prairies of Northtern Illinois, his father having landed interests here and on the 15th of June he arrived in this county to make a permanent settlement here, and to ally his fortunes wtih those of the pioneers that had preceded his into this then sparsely settled wilderness. He located on a tract of land that his father had entered from the Government, situated one mile south of the present site of Compton. The prairies were then but little used for agricultural purposes, as the early settlers had not realized their value as land of surpassing fertility. There were no railways, and Aurora and Peru were the nearest market towns, through the farmers of then took their grain and other products to Chicago.

Mr. Holdren erected suitable buildings on his, land and busily engaged in its improvement for some years. In 1863 he sold it and bought another on section 16 Brooklyn township, upon which he lived until 1876, when he took up his residence in the village of Compton, and has remained here since. He has acquired a handsome property by the exercise of those traits of character that mark him as a thrifty, sagacious man. with a full under-standing of the best way to handle his affairs so as to make money. He is the owner of four hundred acres of fine farming land. Conventently divided into three farms, that are amply supplied with all the necessary buildings, and are under excellent tillage.

In what he has accomplished our subject has been greatly aided by his wife who has been to him all that the term helpmate implies, as it was his good fortune to marry, in August, 1849, Miss Phebe A. Derr, a native of the same State as himself. Her birthplace being in Northuberland County. They have five children, William C. Eleanora, Edward, Janet and Sherman J. William married Miss Ellin Adrian, and they have two children, Frannie and John. Eleanora married Shepard Mannon, and they have three children, Emma C. Willard and Laura. Janet is the of Alonzo Davison and has two children Gracie P. and R. Palmer, Edward married Miss Emma G. Swope, and they have two children, Emma C. and Calvin. Sherman married Miss Ellen N. Kline, and they have one child Rosanna.

Phineas Holdren, a venerable resident of Anthony township, Montour Co. Pa. now living and retired, was engaged in farming and carpentry there for many years and by a long life of industry gained the respect of all his fellow citizens.

He was born May 13, 1833, near Whitehall in what in now Montour Co. Phineas Holdren was given no chance for schooling in his boyhood, being obliged to help with the work at home as soon as he could give any assistance, and the facilities for education were limited at that time in the neighborhood. When 18 years old he was apprenticed to learn the trade of carpenter and cabinetmaker, and while serving his time received twelve cents a day, for two years he was thus engaged at Millville, Columbia Co. some time later, he went west and was an early settler in the state of Minnesota, taking up a farm near St. Paul upon which he remained for nine years. During that period Little Crow, the Sioux indian chief commenced the hostilities of 1862 - 1863 in that section, and he was soon captured and shot for his misdeeds.

returning to Pa. in 1862 Mr. Holdren enlisted, Oct 12, 1862 in Company "G" 178th regiment, Pa Militia, under Captain W.M.G. Adams for nine months service receiving his discharge July 27, 1863 at Camp Curtion Harrisburg Pa. He went back to Minnesota and worked at the carpenter trade, also spent two years in Illinois.

Selling his farm in the west, he returned to Anthony Township, Montour Co. Pa. where he bought part of his father's land. He operated same and also engaged in work at his trade, being succesful in both lines which he continued until his retirement, in the year 1897. On April 6, 1857 at Milton, Pa. Mr. Holdren married Phoebe Crawford who was born September 7, 1835, at Milton Northumberlan Co. Pa. Her sister Jalena Crawford, married George Holdren brother of Phineas. Her maiden name was Troy. Mrs. Holdren died November 21, 1909, aged seventy four years. Nine children were born to this union.

Mr. Holdren has always been a good citizen, and public-spirited in his support of measures for the welfare of the community, but he has taken no direct part in public affairs. He has been a Republican in political connection, and stanch in his support of the party. He is a member of the G.A.R. post at Millville.

Vinton Parr weighed over 350 pounds and farmed both sides of the Ohio River banks and hauled staves other times. The roads were terrible to travel and someone asked him what he did when he got stuck in the mud and he answered that he just got off the wagon and he joined the horses in pulling the wagon load out. He died in his bed after a hearty meal of chicken.  Vinton Parr also owned a farm near Middlebourne, W. VA. He died in Tyler County, W. VA. and is buried up on the hill above the Ohio River, out of Friendly, Tyler County, W. VA., and the cause of his death is listed as heart failure.

According to "The Tallow Light" a bulletin published by the Washington County, O., Historical Society in their January, 1968, issue, they had readings from a cemetery located on the J.F. Goodman Farm, Newport Township, Washington County, O. It is located toward the Ohio River down in the vicinity of the Baker Cemetery at Lower Newport, probably a mile or so below the big old brick house which was always referred to as the George Henry Holdren house. There is one Holdren stone which reads: Holdren, Sacred to the Memory of Fanny, dau of Coleman and Margaret Holdren, who departed this life the 21st day of September 1837 in the 17th year of her age.

Although Mr. and Mrs. Willis Holdren were born a little over 60 miles apart it took the lure of the West before they met here in western South Dakota.

Willis Holdren was born in a little town near Compton, Illinois, about fifty miles west of Chicago on November 11, 1854. His parents came from Pennsylvania and lived for a time in Chicago where his two older brothers, Dennis and John, were born,

His father was a cabinet maker, also he built grand stairways in mansions in Chicago. Later his parents moved to near Compton where Willis his sister, Jeannie, and two younger brothers, James and Barnes, were born.

During the Civil War, Wills father was drafted into the Union Army and Dennis, although only sixteen years old, enlisted. They were both killed in battles of the War.

After the War, Willis and his brothers were sent to a school for sons of veterans of the Civil War. How long they attended this school is not known, but from old letters read, is is known Willis, while a young man, lived near where he was born.

John, his older brother, became an engineer on a train that ran into Kansas. On some of his runs, Willis accompanied him. On these trips he saw many buffalo heards. The sight of the buffalo decided him to be a buffalo hunter, and together with the reports received of finding gold in the Black Hills, he decided to come west.

He told of driving a six-oxen team in a wagon train from Pierre to  the Hills. Most merchandise was brought up the Missouri River to Pierre, bound for the Black Hills. Not until he arrived in Deadwood did he learn that one in the wagon train was Calamity Jane, as her manner and dress was of a man. On this trip it was one of Willis chores in the evening to reset the loose tires on the wagon wheels. The wooden felloes would dry out and the iron rims become loose. To make the rims tight again, They were removed from the wheels and heated so they would expand, then wet gunnysackin was placed around the felloes and the rims were hammered in place again. When the rims cooled they contracted and would be tight on the wheels again.

Will as he was called here instead of Willis, arrived in Deadwood in the spring of 1878, the trip from Pierre having taken about twenty-five days.

Alva Young, who also drove a freight wagon, Clarence and Charles Holdren, cousins of Willis, all came at the same time. Clarence built a cabin in the east part of Sturgis which Calamity Jane occupied while he was buffalo hunting.

Will liked sports, he was a good ice skater and told of skateing long distance on the Mississippi River before coming west. Here he used to skate up the Belle Fourche River to pay his taxes at Belle Fourche. He also played baseball and was the pitcher on the first team of Vale.

Will was also the barber in the neighborhood the men coming to his home for haircuts. Likewise, he built the chimneys of many of the homes here abouts. among them the Holst, Felion, McKillips, beside his own and on the early-day schoolhouses. He also served several terms on the Vale school board.

He also liked hunting and together with Hanford Beals and Miner Wood used to go to Piedmont to hunt deer. Win Cox, who then lived there hunted with them. Will had a hunting license every year until two years before his death. He also trapped beaver, gray wolves, and coyotes, some of the pelts he tanned and made into robes or rugs. Except for one trip he made to Chicago with cattle, Will was never more than sixty miles from home. While in Chicago he visited his relatives near his childhood home.

Katherine (Tena) Holst, wife of Willis Holdren, was born Aug 16, 1859, at Sabula, Iowa, south of Dubuque on the Mississippi River.

She was the oldest daughter of Johann and Christine Holst, who had emigrated from Schleswig Holstein, then a province of Denmark in 1851, but a few years later claimed by Germany in the Prussian War. This war was the reason for the emigrants coming to America among them Johann Holst and some brothers and sisters and Christine Staack, whom Johann married after they reached America, from New Orleans where the ship docked, the party came up the Mississippi River to Sabula, Iowa. From Sabula the Holst family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where they owned a hotel.

Tena an Lena came with John, the oldest Holst son, to Deadwood, Tena was employed by Isaac Chase to care for his three small daughters while he took his wife to California for her health. Tena saved her wages and invested in cattle which ran with her father's heard on the prairie but th blizzard of 1887, many perished. Some were found ten miles southeast of home.

In 1888 Tena was married to Willis Holdren at Whitewood South Dakota Tena remembered the Indian scare of 1890-1891 when many families either gathered at the Rosander Store or moved to the Hills towns, but the Holdrens stayed home. When Tena was alone she had a gun handy and no one entered the house until she knew his identity.

One of the highlights of Tina life was having the privilege of talking over the air on station KOBH, Rapid City, it was located on top story of the Sheraton-Johnson Hotel. She was accompanied by her sister Lena Holst Arndt. and Frank Glover, they were interviewed by Bob Dean, concering their life in early days in Dakota.

Tena lived eleven more years on the farm after her husband died. Some of her grandchildren stayed with her, among them were Everett and Donald Adams, Katherine Schaff, and slso Patricia Holdren.

Harry the youngest child of James Monroe Adams and Sophia Dudley was educated at the Antioch School near Solon and later attended the Willis Academy at Iowa City. In 1898 with two of his brothers, he operated a ranch north of White Lake, South Dakota, where he remained for one and 1/2 years. After this he operated a profitable cement business in White Lake, until he was called home to care for his aged father, who passed away a few months later in November 1907. Upon returining to White Lake he found he no longer had any cement business, so he went to work in Wolcott's Merchandise Store.    In 1910 Harry and Gene, his brother shipped a carload of stock and machinery to Whitewood, then moved it to Vale, where they bought land from W.D. Holdren and Andrew Rosander, where Gene built his home. They were partners in locating homesteaders in the Owl Butte vicinity, east of Newell. They would meet people in Sturgis, Newell, or Vale, in a surrey and drive them out to different sections of land, where they would select the land that they wanted. They would then drive them to a land office in Vale or Newell to file on the land for a homestead. The oder natives called these people honyockers.

After the country became more settled and the land business fell off, Harry went to work for Julius Voight in his general store in Vale. After a few years of looking over the local "belles" Harry married Fern Holdren in November 1912.  Prior to her marriage she attended high school in Sturgis and business college in Rapid City. They set up their housekeeping over the store and in 1914 a son, Everett was born. The rooms became too small now so Harry bourght a vacant house in town and moved it out to a piece of land he owned across the road from Fern's folks, and remodeled it, where they moved in the spring.

In 1917 the twins were born Donald and Dorene, in the Newell Hospital. Harry took an active part in civic affairs. He served several years as township treasurer, and also as a member of the Vale School Board. He was instrumental in getting the school township changed over to and independent school district. He as a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge in Vale and an active member of the Odd Fellow Lodge. In later years his health failed so they bought a small home in Vale where he passed away in November 1944.

89.       William C. HOLDREN #438 (31.John4, 17.Adren3, 3.Benjamin2, 1.Matthias1) born 15 Jun 1850, PA., Occupation Farmer, married (1) 28 Feb 1882, in Dixon, IL., Marrilla ADRIAN #443, born 1858, (daughter of Evans ADRIAN #1752 and Mary Ann ANLER #1753) died 1912, married (2) Margaret E. ______ #1754, born 1858, died 1881.  William died 1920, Compton, Lee, IL.  SOURCE: History of Lee Co. 1881. and Maxine Holdren Gilmore.

William C. Holdren is the owner of a farm of eighty acres on section 10, Brooklyn township, near the city limits of Compton. He came to this county in 1851, bought by his parents, John an Phoebe (Derr) Holdren. He was then but a year old, his birth having occurred in Pennsylvania, June 15, 1850. The father had purchased the property upon which the family settled in 1848. Three years later he brought his family to the middle west, and they took up their abode upon the tract of government land which he had secured, and which was still in its wild condition, not a furrow having been turned or an improvement made. With characteristic energy he began its development and converted the place into rich fields. He was a very popular man, and one who left the impress of his individuality for good upon the community in which he lived. He was at the head of the Union League and was therefore in thorough sympathy with the Union cause and the administration at Washington. One of his brothers was an enlisted soldier in the Union army. John Holdren died in 1898, having for two years survived his wife, who passed away in 1896. Their remains being interred Malugin Grove cemetery.

William C. Holdren was the eldest in his father's family. He had comparatively limited opportunities of attending school, having to put aside his text-books at the age of fifteen years in order to assist his father in the further cultivation and development of the home place. He was thus employed until he attained his majority, after which he learned the carpenter's trade with his uncle, Mathias, with whom he worked until 1881. In that year he securd a position as fireman on the Chicago, Burlinton and Quincy Railroad and spent three years in that way. He next began building residencees in the vicinity and erected many of the substantial homes of the district until 1907. In that year he accepted the position of salesman for the Acme Harvester Company and has found the business not only congenial but profitable. He seems almost intuitively to know how to approach a man and by square dealing and progressive methods has found no difficulty in disposing of the goods which he handles. He owns two farms which are now managed by his son and Mr. Holdren is largely concentratin his attention upon commercial prusuits.

On the 28th of February, 1882, in Dixon, Mr. Holdren was united in marriage to Miss Marilla E. Adrian, a daughter of Evans and Mary Ann Arian. Her father was a large stockraiser and was the owner of the Glenwood farm. The mother died in March, 1912, and was laid to rest in the Malugin Grove cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Holdren  have become the parents of three children: Fannie, wife of William Bird, a retired farmer; John, a representative farmer of Viola township; and Emma, who resides at home.

In politics Mr. Holdren is a progressive, while fraternally he is connected with the Masons. holding membership in the lodge at Compton and in the chapter and commandery at Mendota. He belongs to the United Bretheren church, in which he is serving as a trustee. He attributes his success and justly so to his hard work, and his close application and energy constitute an example that others might profitably follow.
